Boyfriend update, Iowa, SOTU, Super Bowl, Greta Thunberg, GOP homophobia & more
Hey everybody!
What a wild and crazy week it has been.
In the widely-anticipated boyfriend update, I'll let you guys in on the fact that we're heading into a very, very busy two-month phase. Med school boo, being in med school, has a huge test coming up in two months that he has to study for 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week, until the day of the test. So we will sadly be spending a bit less time together, although we'll still have a few nights together each week and we will get lunch/dinner regularly during study breaks. The good news: At the end of it all, we're taking a week-long trip to the Dominican Republic!
I worked on Sunday to cover the Super Bowl (the political ads, mostly). I actually liked watching the Super Bowl, but tbh was kind of bored during the whole football part and mostly just liked the controversial advertisements. I thought both of Trump's Super Bowl ads were compelling, especially the criminal justice reform one, as the economy one left out some key facts & figures. Mike Bloomberg's Super Bowl ad really pissed me off, as you'll see later on in this note.
It was super, duper fun staying up until midnight on Monday night waiting for Iowa caucuses results that never came. The Democratic Party is REALLY competent, you guys. Definitely let them run our healthcare! I kid, but it was a cool experience covering my first caucus/primary as a full-time journalist.
I wasn't actually working during Trump's State of the Union, but I did catch it this morning. Of course, there were certain parts I disagreed with, but I thought overall it was very strong and focused on positive economic news everyone should appreciate.
Meme of the week: one of my fans made this and I kind of love it.
Food Take:
Peas and cucumbers are absolutely DISGUSTING. Gross, gross, gross. Also, tomatoes are a vegetable and I won't hear anything else you heathens.
Mike Bloomberg's Super Bowl ad pushing gun control was fake news
You might have seen Mike Bloomberg's anti-gun ad at the Super Bowl. It was extremely emotionally compelling. But the entire thing was factually incorrect and woefully misleading. Read more.
Iowa caucuses prove once again that Twitter is not real life
One interesting tidbit that came out of the Iowa caucuses was that 80% of participating voters don't use Twitter for political news. So when will liberal journalists and Democratic candidates stop pandering to woke Twitter? Read more.
Texas GOP denies gay Republican group in overt display of intolerance
To be frank, I'm up in arms over this bullshit. The Texas GOP rejected Log Cabin Republicans from being a party affiliate just because they're gay conservatives, despite many prominent folks such as Rep. Dan Crenshaw and the Texas Young Republicans advocating for their inclusion. Read more.
Greta Thunberg deserves our pity, not a Nobel Peace Prize
Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has now been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time. But I don't think she deserves the award as she hasn't actually accomplished much (by her own admission), and if anything, we ought to feel bad for the exploited, troubled young person. Read more.
Bonus Brad: Me and my two wonderful co-workers Kaylee and Madeline at a birthday party for a co-worker this weekend
P.S. Let me know what you think of my outfit. The entire thing was picked out by the boyfriend. He is re-doing my wardrobe, as I have now given up resistance.
