Game of Thrones, criminal justice, Hong Kong, Seattle socialists & digging up my high school yearbook quote
My senior high school quote aged rather, erm, ironically.
Hey everyone,
I hope you’re dealing with the pandemic chaos as well as possible. For me, I have to say, the uncertainty is the hardest part, and not knowing what’s coming next.
On a lighter note, my boyfriend and I have spent the last few months watching Game of Thrones. (Trigger warning: I am a Cersei stan). I had seen the show before but for him this is the first time. We’re now getting through Season 8, and it’s just as awful I remembered. So sad the way they ruined one of the best shows of all time.
Anyway, if you read just one thing I wrote this past week, make it my National Review op-ed making the case for why populist “law and order” conservatives should actually support criminal justice reform. I’m really proud of it. (And getting published in NR isn’t exactly easy!)
Oh, and I want to make one political and cultural comment in this note. From the New York Times’s Bari Weiss to New York Magazine’s Andrew Sullivan, we are seeing resignation after resignation of independent-minded writers who run against the grain from mainstream liberal media because the hostility toward them is just too much and has finally pushed them out. It is a disgrace to journalism that once-great bastions of liberal journalisms have become so deeply illiberal in their approach to debate and diversity of opinion.
As consumers, we can help. Vote with your wallets, and don’t reward this illiberalism with your eyeballs or subscription dollars. Instead, patronize publications across the political spectrum that reject ‘cancel culture’ and welcome debate.

Food Take: According to this chart, I am a right-wing fascist. And I’m OK with that if it means I get to eat steak the way God intended.
Articles:
The populist opposition to criminal justice reform is totally misplaced. If Tucker Carlson and his acolytes truly want to stick up for the little guy, they should actually support the reform proposal they keep bashing.
Hong Kong is being crushed by Communist China. Here’s how we can help freedom-loving Hong Kongers and our economy at the same time.
Seattle just passed a new tax on jobs in the middle of an economic crisis. But the city council made one group exempt in a truly infuriating exception.
Bonus Brad: I remembered recently that my senior yearbook quote in high school was: "How can I support world peace, if all the ladies are fighting over me?"
