Little Women, War w/ Iran, Corporate Welfare, Judge Judy, and my favorite new pic of me & the boyfriend
Hey everyone,
I hope your 2020 is off to a great start. Mine sure is.
After nearly three weeks apart (!!!) for holiday travel, the boyfriend and I reunited on Sunday. Since then we've hung out a ton. He made us a steak dinner last night -- how lucky am I? I was not permitted to put ketchup on it, sadly. Tonight we're going to see the movie "Little Women." I know there's like a whole controversy surrounding it and some conservatives dislike it or whatever, but I don't really care and just have to see any movie featuring Timothee Chalamet.
I've been reading a lot of science fiction lately, and thanks to everyone who emailed me with recommendations. I highly recommend the excellent book One Second After and its sequels, which detail the real, but sadly ignored, threat posed to the U.S. by an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). I tore through them over winter break and found them fascinating.
I have this pet pipe dream of becoming a novelist in my own right one day. But it'd be a tall task, as the writing skills from nonfiction and journalism don't completely transfer to creative writing. My idea is to combine the two novel topics I find most interesting -- science fiction/dystopian fiction and gay romance books -- to write a gay romance novel that takes place in a zombie apocalypse.
Oh, and as you may have heard, there was this whole thing where we teetered on the edge of war with Iran. For those of you that know anything about my foreign policy inclinations, you'll know that yet another Middle East war is the last thing I want us to get dragged into. After today's speech and Iran's muted response, though, it appears to me that this might just all work out. Thank God.
Meme of the week:
Food Take:
I don't even really like bacon, tbh. Too fatty and greasy. No thanks.
My writing:
Trump Now Has the Chance to De-escalate With Iran and Keep 'America First' Promise
After Trump's measured speech on Wednesday, it's clear that there's a path to peace. Let's just hope the president takes it. Read more.
More Proof Corporate Welfare Doesn't Work
A new study confirms what we already know -- crony government handouts to specific companies don't actually grow the economy. Free-market conservatives have an opportunity here. Read more.
Judge Judy Comes Out as a Nanny Stater
I love Judge Judy and her no-bullshit attitude. So it was sad to see her wade into the 2020 election and endorse an awful candidate. Read more.
Nancy Pelosi is Right About Congress's War Powers
It's rare that I say it, but Nancy Pelosi is completely right, at least, about the need for Congress to reclaim its war powers. There's just one glaringly hypocritical problem with the stance she's taking now. Read more.
Bonus Brad:
A pic of me and the boyfriend from last night, sniped mid-episode during "The Crown." He's wearing the Chelsea F.C. soccer jersey I got him for Christmas!
